Spring has sprung! The warm sunny weather is just around the corner. It's time for a fresh start as we welcome a new season. We are all ready to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sunshine. While we are waiting for summer, to enjoy our vacations, road trips, and adventures, let's focus on the enjoyment we can take from right now, our spring! There are so many ways we can embrace the season ahead of us and make it a great one. Especially in Ottawa! We have created a 'must-do' spring in Ottawa list!

Get outside in the city this spring!

Take a long bike ride with a view. What better way to admire the growth and change in nature than with a scenic bike ride! Take a stroll through
Ottawa's Greenbelt pathways, the Experimental Farms pathway, and the Capital Pathway for some fantastic views!

It's time to picnic! Spring is the perfect time to bring out your picnic blanket, homemade lunch, festive treats, and enjoy the sunshine! You can bask in the scenery as you relax at Dominion Arboretum Park, the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, or Hog's Back Park in Ottawa.

Take a stroll through a local market. Local produce, sweets, homemade goods, and artisanal products can always be found at these locations! This is such a fun activity to do with a friend. It's a great way to spend a Sunday morning in the city shopping outdoors for great quality items! Check out the Ottawa Farmers Market closest to you. They have locations in Westboro, Orleans, Lansdowne, and Barrhaven. Or shop the Byward Market downtown and the Ottawa Artisans Market at St. Laurent!

Pull out the canoe and the kayak! Get out on the water to melt all the worries away! Kayaking and canoeing are ideal ways of unplugging this time of year and enjoying nature. Take a leisurely paddle around Meech Lake, Dow's Lake, or Philippe Lake for some great views. Happy adventuring!

Go on a cherry blossom hunt! You can find beautiful and fragrant cherry blossoms right in the heart of the city! Taking a walk downtown you will be sure to find the blossoming trees near the Rideau Canal, Confederation Park, and Major's Hill Park! Or immerse yourself in the many cherry blossom trees at The Dominion Arboretum! This is a great photo backdrop if you go blossom hunting with your friends.

Looking to reconnect with nature? Take time to do the little things that we often take for granted in our daily lives. Pick wildflowers to decorate your home with. Lay in the grass and look for shapes in the clouds. Wake up early and watch the sunrise at your favourite spot. Take a hike in nature on a trail with a beautiful destination view or try bird watching for the first time.

Ways to Enjoy Spring at Home

Take the time to plan out your garden for the summer to come. There are great planting tips online that will help you decide which vegetables you should plant near each other or in separate boxes/planters. Take a trip to a nursery or local hardware store to purchase your seeds and supplies! Then start your vegetable garden inside! Many vegetables need to be started early in the spring to thrive in the summer. In early March tomatoes and peppers can get started growing inside and towards April kale, broccoli, and cauliflower can be planted inside as well.

Now is also a great time to do some repotting of your beloved house plants. Many plants can quickly outgrow their pots and will need more space to grow in bigger ones. Signs of a plant needing more space are lack of growth, if the roots are growing out of the drainage holes or if during watering the water goes right through the drainage hole. When the weather gets warmer head outside in the backyard and take your plants that are struggling out of their pots, see how they are doing and go from there. You may need to massage the plant's roots before repotting and consider possibly propagating at this time as well.

Take movement and meditation into your backyard! Enjoy your yoga practice outside on the grass and soak up the sunrays. Practicing outside has many benefits, nature can boost your energy, heighten your proprioception skills, awareness and you also have the opportunity to work on your balance, practicing in the grass.

Ready to put on your hosting hat again this spring? Here are a few ideas. Why not plan a spring-themed scavenger hunt outside! Your backyard is the perfect place to have some treasure hunting fun! Host an afternoon of painting and cocktails! Create a signature cocktail for everyone to enjoy and then join an online painting class with an instructor to teach you or play a painting tutorial online! Everyone is sure to have fun creating something new with friends! Lastly, host a floral spring brunch, have everyone wear their best floral attire for some spring fun! Your decor, menu, and drinks can all have a touch of floral flair!

We hope you loved our spring list and take the time to enjoy a few of the ideas over the next few months as the weather warms up and the snow melts away! If you are interested in fun things to do around Ottawa our blogs are always filled with seasonal suggestions we hope you will love!
